Ann, I think the Savage is very easy to handle. You don't want a bike that is going to require a lot of maintenance. The Savage really don't require much maintenance. No more than the Vstar.
One of my friends bought a Vstar for his wife. Same story - the Vstar is too heavy for her. They are now considering to buy a Savage (but the price here in Denmark now is 20 % higher then in 99....).
On the other hand i think your salesman also is right: It just takes practice. But you will surely feel safe earlier on a Savage.
You have just read this forum for one night - and there are many threads! Much of it is about very special things - freak-like subjects. Generally all in this forum praise the easy maintenance. And there is a bunch of nice, wise, creative, helpful aso people in this forum (in particular the freaks).

Maybe you still is in a dilemma - but hopefully on a higher level. If you buy a Savage i can assure you, that you will not regret.
